Do you love natural parks? How about lighthouses and the beach? Whatever you enjoy, Point Loma is sure to deliver.

With so many great places to choose from, we’re here to help you narrow your choices down. Here’s a list of our favorite parks and other attractions near Point Loma.

Balboa Park

You’ll find a little bit of everything at Balboa Park. Whether you love music, the outdoors, or museums, you’ll be right at home.

Check out one of the more than 16 museums that are housed in the park–yes, you read that right! Museum attractions to see include dinosaurs and automobiles.

If you love performances, you’ll find no shortage at Balboa Park. Plays, dancing, music, ballet, and more await your attention.

A stop at the World Famous San Diego Zoo is always worth your time. Just make sure you plan the whole day. There’s so much to see!

And if you love nature, be sure to stop at the Japanese Friendship Garden. You’ll love exploring the 12-acre plot. You can even take a horticultural class while you’re there.

Cabrillo National Monument

If you’re looking for a fun way to enjoy Point Loma’s fabulous weather, check out Cabrillo National Park. History lovers will feel right at home. The monument is named for Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot in the area, in 1542!

Whether you’re interested in the history or not, Cabrillo is a great place to visit. The tide pools are enough to capture anyone’s attention. Explore marine life up close when the tide is low.

While sandy beaches are nice, you’ll love this rocky area and the plants, invertebrates, and fish that can be found there.

The area’s rocky, but it’s still a beach. Come prepared to sunbathe, surf, or swim!

While you’re there, don’t forget to stop in at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. While the lighthouse isn’t operational anymore, it’s a great reminder of the history of the area.

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park offers another great destination for lovers of natural beauty. The park covers a full 68 acres of land along Point Loma’s western edge.

Head to the cliffs and look out toward the ocean. You may just get a glimpse of California gray whales undertaking their annual migration.

Or get out and explore the stunning arches and interesting sea caves. If nothing else, you’ll love the incredible ocean views from the park.

For a beautiful end to your day, head to Luscomb Point for gorgeous views of the sunset.

Plumosa Park

If you’re simply looking for a day out of the house, head on down to Plumosa Park. This 1.4-acre park allows for all the simple things you can enjoy during some time off.

Walk your dog, sprawl out on the green, or bring a book to read. Take time to relax-you’ll love this park!

Shelter Island

Are you looking for a great place to take the little ones? Then look no further than Shelter Island. The kiddos will love the tiny tot play area.

For the tiny and not-so-tiny alike, Shelter Island offers plenty of other fun activities. Take a walk on one of the trails or along the beach. Or launch a boat or fish from the pier.

Restrooms and picnic tables are provided so don’t be afraid to stick around for a while!

Harbor Island Park

For the best of land and sea combined, visit Harbor Island Park. You can even bring your dog with you. Whether you’re jogging, walking, biking, or sitting, you’ll love the stunning ocean view. Get some exercise, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

If you’re looking for a place to host a special event, such as a family get together or a wedding, this gem should be at the top of your list.

Non-Park Attractions

While the parks in the area are fantastic, Point Loma offers many other attractions too. Whether you’re a local or on vacation, here are a few attractions that are worth your time.

Ocean Beach

Great for surfing, swimming, hanging out, or simply grabbing a taco, Ocean Beach is always worth a visit. Fish from the pier if you’d like–you don’t even need a California fishing license. Or visit the dog beach, shop an antique mall, or just enjoy the nightlife.

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery

This federal military cemetery lies in an area that was formerly occupied by an artillery station. More than 77 historic acres await your exploration.

San Diego Seal Tours

Take a ride on both land and sea to get the most out of your Point Loma day out.

USS Midway Museum

No visit to San Diego is complete without a stop in at the USS Midway Museum. Explore the enormous aircraft carrier and relive history at the same time.
